To get some piece of the handheld pie, Sega introduced their Game Gear as a maybe late answer to the Game Boy. With a backlit colour-screen and many good conversions of Mega Drive games, this system had some serious power. A TV-tuner added even more, but the high battery consumption and the dominance of the Game Boy prevented it from ever reaching the success of the big brother.

Um ein Stueck vom Handheld-Kuchen abzubekommen hat Sega als evtl. verspaetete Antwort auf den Game Boy das Game Gear veroeffentlicht. Mit einem hintergrundbeleuchteten Farbbildschirm und vielen guten Umsetzungen bekannter Mega Drive Titel hatte das System ernsthaftes Potential. Ein TV-Tuner hat dies unterstrichen, jedoch hat der hohe Batterie-Verbrauch und die Dominanz des Game Boys den Erfolg verhindert.
